When a tooth is badly decayed or infected, most patients face the same choice, save the tooth with a root canal or take it out and replace it later. Both are valid options and the right answer depends on your specific tooth. Here is how we help patients think it through at our clinics.
What a root canal actually does
A root canal removes the infected pulp from inside the tooth, cleans the space, and seals it. The outer tooth then gets a strong crown so it can chew normally again. Modern root canals are done under numbing, so most patients feel little to no discomfort during the visit.
When saving the tooth is the better path
- The outer tooth structure is still strong enough to support a crown
- The infection is limited to the pulp and has not spread deep into the bone
- You want to keep your natural bite and prevent nearby teeth from shifting
- You would like to avoid the extra time and cost of an implant later
When extraction may be the safer choice
- The tooth is cracked below the gum line and cannot be rebuilt
- There is severe bone loss around the root
- The tooth is a wisdom tooth that is causing repeated pain or crowding
- A previous root canal has failed and a redo is not possible
Replacing an extracted tooth
